Sorry this post is so late this week! I spent a couple days in Bear Lake with my sister and got side tracked. We had a blast soaking up the sun with our boys minus the drive there where we had three children screaming and throw up everywhere.......Car Sickness isn't pretty (my poor 2 year old nephew). Needless to say me and Will opted to ride with my grandparents on the way home! I got Gramps to tell me the story of how they he and my grandmother met. I thought I share it because next week will be their 58th anniversary and well 58 years of a happy marriage must mean they did something right! and yes I will tie food into this! (see bottom for 80/20 Challenge!)
My grandpa had a good friend who wanted to date my grandmother so they came up with a plan. My grandfather was suppose to pick up my grandmother for his good friend and his good friend was bringing a date for my grandpa and than they were suppose to switch dates when they stopped to get cokes. Well they ended up never switching dates, because my grandpa was having such a great time with my grandmother. My grandfather said that his good friend was a little mad after the date but they remained friends. Gramps said my grandmother was just so much fun to be around that he couldn't do the switch. Just a little over a year late they married and I guess the rest is history. Thank goodness my grandpa never switched dates!
So now that we've had a love story onto the next subject food...........
Today I think I will discuss the 80/20 rule.
A lot of people judge Dietitians, they often think we never eat ice cream, candy or cake. But the truth is that most Dietitians live by the 80/20 rule. 80% of the time you need to be eating what is good for you body. This means lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and low fat dairy. However 20% of the time we can eat what are taste buds want. That means we get to eat ice cream, candy and cake. It is all about developing a healthy relationship with food and your body. I can definitely tell when I eat too many things that aren't good for me and so I try to avoid eating too much of the things that don't make me feel good. Sometimes, I do eat a little too much ice cream, but I don't beat myself up about it. I recognize that this it was an isolated incidence and that I have another tomorrow where I can eat delicious foods that make me feel good. I think a lot of people have a trust issue with food.....they don't trust themselves enough to let themselves enjoy food! Yes this is starting to sound like a love relationship and I guess that is how the two ideas are related!
My challenge for you is that you listen to your body. Your body will tell you when you are hungry and when you are full. You have to start loving yourself enough to make healthy choices 80% of the time, and you don't beat yourself up about the other 20%!
